In its strive to promote clinical excellence among its members and the orthodontic community, the Saudi Orthodontic Society (SOS) decided to award an annual Prize for best orthodontically treated cases.
Regulations for the excellence in clinical practice Prize
- The excellence in clinical practice cases prize is awarded annually to presenters of the best cases, as judged by a panel of referee selected by the Saudi Orthodontic Society Board.
- The judges’ decision is final and neither they nor the SOS Prize Committee or Chairman will get involved in correspondence regarding the outcome.
- Monetary prizes will be awarded to winners. Also, SOS Trophies will be presented to winners at the 13th annual Saudi Orthodontic Society Conference with the opportunity of publishing his/her case in the Journal of Orthodontic Science, the official publication of the SOS, in accordance with the publishing guidelines of the journal.
- This prize is open to any member (including Postgraduate students in orthodontic programs) of the SOS who is in good standing with the SOS and their appropriate professional bodies.
- Submission to present cases must be made on the standardized case submission PPT work file obtainable from the SOS website. The closing date for receipt of completed entry August 31st, 2025, each participant is allowed to present one case only.
- Complete pre- and post-treatment case records are required for submission consisting of eight composite pictures (extraoral frontal, extraoral smiling, extraoral profile, intraoral frontal, intraoral right buccal, intraoral left buccal, intraoral maxillary occlusal, intraoral mandibular occlusal), pictures of models (frontal, right buccal, left buccal, maxillary occlusal and mandibular occlusal), a panoramic X-ray and a traced lateral cephalometric X-ray. Records
should be uploaded on the case presentation file template provided by the SOS. The file should show the initials of the patient but not the presenter’s name. - Presenters are required to submit a consent form signed by the patient if above 18 years old, or the patient and their guardian if younger than 18 years to submit cases for the prize.
- Presenters are not permitted to advertise any orthodontic appliances, brand or products.
- Case submitted must show outstanding excellence both on diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment execution with the preference of presenting post-retention records of at least one year.
- Case submitted must be treated mostly with fixed orthodontic appliances with minor intervention from other dental specialties, such as prosthodontics or maxillofacial surgery, If you choose to submit a surgical case, a complete set of Interim or Pre-Surgical records must be present. Simple alignment of the teeth and referral of the patient to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon is unacceptable.
- To ensure a bias-free evaluation by the panel of referees (evaluators), all submitted cases by the participants will be anonymous. Grading will be based on three criteria: quality of records, difficulty of the case and quality of the final result. All three criteria will be weighted to their final grade.
- The prize will be presented by the president of the SOS accompanied by distinguishing delegates at a special ceremony held during the annual meeting of the SOS. Finalist must be present during the prize ceremony. Otherwise, he/she may not be awarded the prize. In the unfortunate case of absence due to unforeseen reasons, a letter should be addressed to the president of the SOS explaining the reason for the absence.
- The winner of the award will be approached by the Editor of the Journal of Orthodontic Science, the official publication of the Saudi Orthodontic Society, to submit a case report for publication, subject to the normal refereeing process. It is, therefore, a requirement to not have published a case report based on presented cases in any other journals.
